Summer Solstice in Ses Illes


From the Balearic Islands, Insotel invites you to spend with us the festival of the Summer Solstice. On the night of June 23th the known festival takes place in the night of the Summer Solstice. These dates are of a particular relevance to the Balearic Islands and many festivals are housed.


Many localities celebrate this magical night which coincides with the summer solstice. One of the most famous festivals is undoubtedly “Les festes of be” of Menorca. It is known worldwide for two reasons, the crowd of people gather year after year and the great show with horses.

This place brings together heroic performances with rooted traditions as the Balearic Cargol des Born, where a group of horses circling around the Plaça des Born dancing with the rhythm of music. When night falls, these riders make an offering to all its neighbors going to visit their homes as a symbol of respect.


On this island the tradition is to make bonfires in the sand at nightfall accompanied by musical performances. In the town of Sant Joan de Labritja, the summer solstice party is experiencied more intensely. It is traditional cooking “macaroni of San Juan”. These are prepared from cooked noodles in sweet milk with cinnamon and lemon.


In the towns of Deia, Mancor de la Vall, Muro and Son Servera San Juan Bautista, Saint Juan is the patron saint and that’s on this date the festivities multiply.

So, the night of June 23th in Palma de Mallorca takes place a “correfoc”, a show with fireworks and demons.

On the other hand, in the towns of Felanitx and Sant Llorenc des Cardassa on June 24th, a dance called Sant Joan Pelós takes place. This dance is a tradition where a man dances representing San Juan carrying a lamb.
